This interview with the Managing Director of Locumsgroup, Paul Ahearne, takes you through the history, the culture and the unique approach to wealth creation of the organisation.

What is the background of Locumsgroup?

The organisation has an interesting history: Locumgroup was established in London in 195 2, originally to assist Australian medical and dental practitioners with their business and financial affairs. Early business services included finding employment for medical practitioners. While no longer placing doctors in jobs, we believe we make the job of managing the financial and business affairs of our clients a lot easier and a lot more effective.

Since 1991 we have extended our charter beyond our traditional client base. We now offer a full range of financial services to our broad client base, while still maintaining the exacting service standards that established the business all those years ago.

How would you describe the organisation?

We are an integrated financial services organisation providing competitive mortgage products; financial management advice; and taxation and accounting services.

Your mortgage interest rates are very competitive.
How do you keep them so low?

As an integrated financial services company, mortgages are only one of our three core businesses. Therefore, we are not solely dependent on mortgage income for the wellbeing of the organisation. As a result, we can provide well priced mortgage products within fully optioned loans for our clients.

How is Locumsgroup different to other financial services companies?

Our main point of differentiation is that we are a multi-disciplined practice: we are financial advisers, we are Chartered Accountants, and we are mortgage managers. And we integrate these three services for all of our clients. We have specialist staff working in each of the divisions so our clients get to deal with a specialist in each area, these specialists then collaborate within an integrated organisation to achieve the best outcome for our client. In summary, we are an one-stop-shop for our clients' financial needs.

How important is the wealth creation process in the achivement of financial independence?

Our experience has shown that the wealth creation process is more a science than an art. There are specific steps that need to be taken if you want to achieve financial independence by your own means. In over 20 years of reviewing clients' personal balance sheets, I have come across far too many that looked like a patchwork quilt with assets and liabilities that are neither complementary or well thought through. The introduction of wealth creation process will bring about a more effective outcome.

Why should a client use Locumsgroup to assist them in the management of their financial affairs?

A client might consider using us because they realise the benefits of having their accountant, their financial adviser and their mortgage manager all working in an environment where the clients' complete financial situation is known to all three advisers. This means the taxation affairs, investments and a client's loans are all managed in a cohesive and integrated manner. By managing debt effectively, we can manage our client's equity and that of course is the key to wealth creation. It is the integration of these three keys disciplines that enable us to provide a level of service that satisfies the expectation of our clients.

How would you summarise the wealth management philosophy of Locumsgroup?

Simply put, I would say that if you can't measure it, you can't manage it. Access to proper financial management advice, dealing with an adviser you can relate to, is going to help you reach your goals. Your assets must be complementary and efficient and your liabilities must be correctly structured. You can achieve extraordinary outcomes by using a correctly structured wealth creation strategy.
